Qader Molla Case Timeline

Date Event
July 13, 2010 On July 13 in 2010, Abdul Qader Molla was arrested from the High Court gate in a separate murder-and-arson case filed with Pallabi Thana by an injured freedom fighter in January 2008.
August 2, 2010 Qader Molla, already detained in the previous criminal case, was arrested on charges of crimes against humanity.
December 18, 2011 Prosecution submitted documents supporting charges, Tribunal set date for taking cognizance
December 28, 2011 Tribunal took cognizance against Qader Molla and fixed date for the framing of the charges
January 7, 2012 Prosecution sought to include a further additional charge under section 3 (2) (a) IC(T)A in relation to the alleged crimes committed against the family of Hazrat Ali.
April 1, 2012 Defense filed for Discharge of Charges.
April 9 and 10, 2012 fixed for argument on matter of charge framing, both sides requested additional time
April 15 and 16, 2012 Prosecution filed application for the transfer of the case to the 2nd Tribunal. Order was passed on April 16th transferring the case.
May 08, 2012 Defense began their arguments for Discharge.
May 28, 2011 The Charge Framing Order was passed by Justice ATM Fazle Kabir
June 06, 2012 Defense filed Application for Review of Framing of Charges on the basis that 1) the charges failed to allege that the crimes charged were part of a widespread and systematic attack as required for Crimes against Humanity; 2) that charging multiple modes of liability violates right to adequate preparation of defense and make charges 1 through 6 defective; 3) that some of the charges contain separate incidents and are therefore prejudicial to the accused;and 4) that the prosecution failed to present evidence connecting the accused to Al-Badr, but nonetheless refer to him as a member of that group, thereby prejudicing the accused even after the court refused a prosecution application to amend the charges and identify Molla as a leader of Al-Badr.
June 14, 2012 Tribunal passed an order on the review application rejecting the Defense’s arguments and stating that any issues could appropriately be resolved in the course of the trial without prejudice to the Accused.
June 20, 2012 Prosecution began its case-in-chief, presenting its opening arguments and conducting the examination of prosecution witness #1.
July 2, 2012 Prosecution Witness #1, Mujaffar Ahmad Khan, began testimony
July 10, 2012 Prosecution Witness #2, Sayad Shahidul Hoque Mama, began testimony
July 17, 2012 Prosecution Witness #3, Roksana Khatun Nasa, began testimony

July 23, 2012 In-camera session was fixed for testimony of Roksana Khatun Nasa but she did not appear. An application was filed for issuing a summons on Khandakar Abdul Ahsan, Momena Begom, Amir Hussan Molla, Shafiuddin Molla, Abdus Sattar Molla, Hazi Abdur Rouf Molla, Md Jainuddin, and Poetess Kazi Rozi
July 24, 2012 Prosecution Witness #5, Poetess Kazi Rozi, began testimony
July 29, 2012 Prosecution Witness #6, Khandakar Abdul Ahsan, began testimony
August 1, 2012 Prosecution Witness #7, Shafiuddin Mollas, began testimony; Prosecution submitted an application for permission to call an additional 3 witnesses as permitted under Section 9(4) of the ICT Act.

October 31, 2012 The Tribunal passed an Order directing the defense to complete the Cross Examination of the Investigating Officer by November 1st, or be debarred from further cross investigation.
November 05, 2012 The Tribunal heard arguments regarding the number of Defense Witnesses to be allowed and fixed the number at 6.
 November 11, 2012  Defense submitted two applications requesting 1) that the order of November 5th limiting the number of Defense witnesses to 6 be recalled and 2) that Prosecution Witnesses 1,3,4,and 5 be recalled. Both applications were rejected on November 12, 2012.
 November 15, 2012 Defense case-in-chief began – Witness #1 and Accused, Abdul Qader Molla, began testimony
November 21, 2012 Defense Witness #2, Shushil Chandro Mondol, began testimony
November 26, 2012 Defense Witness #3, Muslem Uddin Ahmed, began testimony
December 2, 2012 Defense Witness #4, Mrs. Shahera, began testimony
December 5, 2012 Defense Witness #5, Altab Uddin Molla, began testimony
December 13, 2012  Defense witness #6, A.I.M. Loqueman, began testimony
December 17, 2012 Prosecution began its closing arguments, the prosecution additionally requested the tribunal to add the charge of genocide to charges 4 (framed as “murder as crime against humanity, aiding and abetting the commission of murder as crime against humanity, and complicity in committing such offence”) and 5 (framed as “murder as crime against humanity, aiding and abetting and complicity in committing such offence.”)
December 27, 2012 The prosecution completed its closing arguments and called for the death penalty. The court fixed January 7th for the Defense’s closing arguments
January 17, 2013 Closing Arguments were completed and the Tribunal took the case into consideration awaiting verdict: “CAV”

December 12, 2013 Supreme Court’s Appellate Division dismissed the request to review a petition on behalf of Quader Molla for a stay of execution. Abdul Quader Molla was executed, at 10:01 PM Bangladesh local time.
