12 August 2013: ICT-2 Daily Summary – Reappointment of Justice Shahinur Islam

Tribunal 2 was not in session today. However, Justice Md. Shahinur Islam was officially re-appointed to Tribunal 2 after having been sworn in as an additional Supreme Court Judge on 5 August 2013.  Justice Md Shahinur Islam began serving as a member of the International Crimes Tribunal 2 on 25th March 2012. Recently on 31st July, 2013, he was appointed as an Additional Judge of the High Court Division (HCD) of the Supreme Court of Bangladesh, in accordance with the nomination of Mr Justice Md Muzammel Hossain, the Chief Justice of Bangladesh. As per Article 95(1) of the Constitution of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh, Judges of the Supreme Court are appointed by the President in consultation with the Chief Justice. Article 98 of the Constitution authorizes the appointment of one or more duly qualified persons to be Additional Supreme Court Judges. Accordingly, After taking the oath on 5 August 2013 Justice Md. Shahinur Islam was officially considered discharged from his previous position as a Member of Tribunal 2. Today he was reappointed to the Tribunal. 

Prior to his previous appointment as a Member of Tribunal 2, Justice Shahinur was the Registrar of the International Crimes Tribunal. He joined the judiciary of Bangladesh as a Judge in April, 1983 and was promoted to the position of District Judge in January 2001
